Constantia Glen releases robust new Bordeaux vintage

Constantia Glen, the magnificently appointed boutique wine estate known for exceptional cool climate wines, has released the much anticipated 2011 vintage of its flagship Bordeaux-style red, Constantia Glen FIVE.

An elegant expression of the five Bordeaux varieties grown on the upper reaches of the Constantiaberg, the wine was shaped by the unique location of the vineyards just below Constantia Nek. Constantia Glen’s cool climate vineyards ensure long, slow ripening of the grapes lending a wonderful expression of dark berry aromas and flavours with finely structured tannins to the Constantia Glen FIVE.

The 2011 vintage, with its broad spectrum of aromas centred around a core of rich black berries, is a blend of 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 17% Petit Verdot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec. This complex blend matured for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels.

“The rich, ripe bouquet is a true advocate of the FIVE’s cassis core. The dense flavour concentration follows effortlessly from the nose to the palate, where polished tannins provide great texture to balance the wine’s powerful weight,” says winemaker Justin van Wyk, who has the good fortune of working with vineyards that benefit from an extra hour of sunlight that spills over the Constantia Nek when the rest of the Constantia Valley is in shadow.

These extra sunlight hours allow for optimal tannins and the slow ripening lends well rounded, ripe flavour profiles to the wines.

“The complex and concentrated flavours of the FIVE, along with its powerful structure, will continue to evolve during bottle ageing under the correct cellaring conditions for the next 10 to 15 years,” adds van Wyk, who recommends enjoying the wine with herb-crusted roast lamb with a smoked aubergine compote and tandoori lamb jus, or peppered beef fillet served with Mediterranean vegetables on bed of burnt sage butter polenta.

The Constantia Glen FIVE 2011 is available at fine dining restaurants and boutique wine shops. It sells at the cellar door for R330 a bottle.
